I’m not a big fan of taking medicine even when my nose is running or I have a sore throat or cough. But plant medicine for self-healing really excites me! And I want to share it with anyone interested in an alternative type of medicine and healing yourself.
In this post, I’ll walk you through my journey of how I got into plant medicine, how I created my own teas and tinctures using the plants I had in my own backyard, and the results I, my family, and my friends have been experiencing!
How I Got Into Plant Medicine
I’ve always had some type of vegetable garden and have many flower beds surrounding the yard. This year my son wanted to get into gardening. He and I watched videos on building a forest garden, and we both were all in to make it happen. My yard is big enough with a lot of sun, and we built an amazing garden with fruit trees, and all types of vegetables and herbs.
My son is looking to eat more organically to help ease his digestive issues. We bought organic seeds from my niece in Michigan who runs an organic farm, Renegade Acres, and sells organic seeds at Garden Hoard.com.
We continue to watch gardening videos and learn all we can. Next year will be even more spectacular with all the knowledge and no-how we’ve gained. As all our beautiful organic vegetables were growing, I started looking at all the other things growing in my yard.
There was lemon balm, fleabane, feverfew, goldenrod, comfrey, stinging nettle, and so much more! I was already using the comfrey, purple dead nettle, and mullein in my CBD pain reliever body butter.
I started to check out any plant that I didn’t know what it was.
What are its healing properties?
How do I use it to heal myself and my family?
I saw Dr. Nicole Apelian advertising her “Lost Book of Herbal Remedies” on Facebook. And my daughter ended up buying the book as a birthday gift. It’s amazing!
I signed up and took her class to become a certified Herbalist. I used the knowledge I gained to create more tinctures and teas using the healing plants I grew in my own backyard!
Making Herbal Teas and Tinctures
I looked up the plants’ properties, made lists of what plants are good for different ailments, and then picked, dried, and combined the herbs and flowers that had the same effect on the body. Long ago, there was only plant medicine… no medicines filled with who knows what! I wanted to combine my own plants into healing remedies.
I started making herbal teas with plants that had similar healing properties. Then, I picked fresh flowers and leaves from plants known for ages to have healing effects on people. I had a large bottle of 200-proof pure grain alcohol that was excellent for extraction.
I followed what I learned in my class and I created several healing tinctures that help with what ails you! The tinctures needed 6 weeks of extraction, and I patiently waited.
Trying Things Out
My nose is always runny. So I tried the stinging nettle tincture when it was ready, and couldn’t believe how quickly my nose dried up! My neighbor has been using stinging nettle for years to help her husband’s allergies and asthma. It really works!
My daughter had a sample of each of the first four teas I created and she especially liked the one I call Feel Good Tea. When she had an upset stomach, she drank a cup and she said she felt better! It’s also good for headaches, and for easing stress.
My son, and other family members and friends have been sending good feedback, and I’m thrilled to have my teas and tinctures available for those who might like to try an alternative medicine before reaching for a bottle of medicine on the grocery shelf.
These herbal remedies have worked in the past… way past… back to Native American times and our grandparents’ days.
I’m excited to heal myself, my family and friends, and whoever else is interested in giving plant medicine a try!

Please discontinue use if you have an allergic reaction. If pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult your doctor before trying any herbal remedies.
